Wow, the past week has been a crazy whirlwind to say the least. Never in my life have I experienced something that had such drastic effects on the entire world. In the course of a week, most people have had their entire lives uprooted and turned inside out in one way or another. It seems that everything has had to change, from how we work, to how kids do school, to how we entertain ourselves, to how we travel, to how we worship and do ministry, to how we interact as people, society, family. Everything has changed, and as I have written about, change is often scary. Uncertainty is also scary. So, an uncertain world in constant flux is terrifying.
You know what is good about change and uncertainty though? What’s good about it is that it is a perfect example of what our God is not. God is unchanging. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. His love is unchanging. His power is unchanging. Not only does He not change, but He can’t change. He is God, and we can take absolute solace in that fact. In addition to His unchanging nature, he is unwavering. We don’t have to worry about God being uncertain or unsteady. In Psalm 18:2 it states, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
Even though it may feel as if everything around us is shifting sand, we have no security, no foothold, nothing to grasp on to, we know that God is certain and unchanging. He is the foundation for our lives, and everything else that is shifting and changing and falling away is nothing but the adornment or the distraction.
So in this time of chaos, hold on to something sure. Immerse yourself in the unchanging truths of the all powerful God we serve and who loves us. Take those truths in and really embrace them. In a world that is a raging sea, anchor yourself in Christ, and then reach out and help those around you do the same.
